Some afternoons at Stamford Bridge feel as if the verdict is written before anyone touches the ball. A Manchester United side in crisis, a manager waiting for the phone call, a captain who had been benched only days earlier. For half a match they played as if none of it mattered. Then one lost pass in midfield changed the afternoon, an arm in the box ended it, and a Chelsea side that had been second best took over a match that had stopped fighting back.
United came to sit deep, win the ball and break fast, and for a while it nearly worked. Diallo and Fernandes had the best chances of the first half, Chelsea leaned on their right side and could not turn the ball into shots, and Estevao saw a goal ruled out for offside. After the break everything flipped. Chelsea took the ball, United went long and lost it, and the first goal came from United's own mistake in midfield. Lisandro Martinez, already booked, finished the match for his team with an arm in Wesley Fofana's face.
Chelsea had 59 per cent of the ball and 18 shots to United's 12. In the first half United's nine shots were worth 1.09 expected goals and Chelsea's seven were worth 0.28. After the break the numbers turned around: 2.39 for Chelsea and 0.08 for United, whose three shots all came in the last twelve minutes. United committed 20 fouls to Chelsea's 8, and Senne Lammens made seven saves to keep the score down.
Morgan Rogers scored in the 50th minute, Martinez was sent off in the 63rd, and Cole Palmer scored the penalty a minute later. Three goals were ruled out for offside, two Chelsea's and one United's. It was United's ninth match without a win in all competitions, only days after heavy defeats to Como and Bournemouth, with Michael Carrick's job under threat.
The sections below go through each team in the same order: shape, build-up, attack, defending, transitions and set pieces. The pictures are ours, from the match video.
Penders; Acheampong, Fofana, Colwill, Palestra; Caicedo, Lavia; Estevao, Palmer, Rogers; Neto
Subs: Chavarria 74', Welbeck, Barco and Gusto 87', Quenda 90+7'. Booked: Penders 90+3'.
Lammens; Yoro, Maguire, Martinez, Dalot; Baleba, Santos; Diallo, Fernandes, Cunha; Mbeumo
Subs: Mainoo 58', Mount and Heaven 66', Zirkzee 77'. Booked: Martinez 59' and 63' (sent off), Maguire 65', Mainoo 70', Mbeumo 81', Zirkzee 86'.
On paper a 4-2-3-1. In the first half the touches say it leaned to the right. Right-back Acheampong played as high as Palmer, with 91 per cent of his touches on that side. Fofana stayed wide enough to cover him, and Estevao was wide and high on the same side. On the other flank Palestra stayed level with the centre-backs, so the left looked cautious and the right looked like the attack. Palmer played as a right-sided number 10 and moved to the middle once United were down to ten men.
Without the ball Chelsea defended in their own half in the first half, then got higher and higher: the average height of their defensive actions rose after the break and again after the red card, when they played almost entirely in United's half.
Chelsea built patiently and safely. They had 15 moves of ten passes or more to United's 6, and only four goal kicks in the whole match. The busiest pairs were Fofana and Colwill, Lavia and Caicedo, and Fofana and Acheampong. Lavia had the most touches of anyone in the match (90). The longest move was 21 passes by eleven players just before half-time, from Chelsea's own box to the edge of United's, and it ended with no shot.
At the restart after the VAR check on United's goal, at 35:00, Chelsea's four defenders spread across the whole width of the pitch with the two midfielders in front of them. They had been under pressure for ten minutes: from the 25th to the 30th minute Chelsea made 8 passes and United 33.
Chelsea attacked down their right: 65 of their 119 completed passes into the final third ended on that side, 25 in the middle and 29 on the left. The first half gave them little. Seven shots, none worth more than 0.07 expected goals. The second half was a different game: 64 passes in the first five minutes against United's 31, 73 per cent of the passes between the 60th and 71st minute, and 11 of their 18 shots, worth 2.39 expected goals.
Estevao was the most dangerous by volume: six shots, three chances created, seven corners and two goals ruled out for offside. Palmer made three key passes and won four fouls. Rogers scored and drove the first goal from the left of the front three. Neto roamed across all three lanes and saw his header in the 51st minute saved by Lammens.
Chelsea won the ball 87 times: 37 in their own third, 38 in the middle and 12 in United's third. They made 21 tackles and 16 interceptions, won 58 per cent of their ground duels and cleared the ball only 11 times (United 19). Lavia was the best defender of the team: four tackles won out of five, four interceptions and 14 recoveries.
United's two best first-half chances both came on fast breaks. At 18:20 Diallo won the ball back on United's right, played one long pass to Mbeumo, and Fernandes shot over seven seconds after the recovery. At 42:00 Fernandes hit a long pass from his own half, a mistake by Fofana let Diallo through, and he missed. Chelsea's line had no time to reset on either.
Chelsea lost 29 of the 133 passes they started in the final third (22 per cent), but they punished United's turnovers. The first goal was a counter after a United loss in midfield, and three of Chelsea's 18 shots were fast breaks.
Chelsea had eight corners (seven by Estevao) and four shots from them: Fofana's header on 22', which hit the post, a second Fofana header on 42', then Acheampong on 69' and Palmer on 80'. The penalty also came from a corner.
On paper a 4-2-3-1. The touches tell a more lopsided story. United's left was crowded and high: Martinez on the left of the centre-backs, Dalot at the height of the midfield, Cunha inside him and Santos next to them. Maguire stayed in the middle, Yoro was on the right almost level with the two midfielders, and Diallo was wide on the right. Fernandes was the highest midfielder and Mbeumo the highest player. Without the ball United defended deep.
This was United's weak point. They went long and lost the ball: 8 of their 9 goal kicks were long, Lammens completed only 56 per cent of his passes, and they lost 35 of the 116 passes they started in their own third (30 per cent; Chelsea lost 9 per cent). They had only 6 moves of ten passes or more, the longest of 14.
The only short goal kick of the match came in the 8th minute: Lammens to Baleba to Martinez, with Chelsea not pressing it. The most frequent pairs were Dalot to Fernandes, Maguire to Yoro, Santos to Fernandes and Santos to Baleba. Fernandes had 80 touches, the most of any United player, and completed only 62 per cent of his 69 passes.
United built on their left and finished on their right: 36 of their 78 completed passes into the final third ended on the right, 26 on the left and 16 in the middle. In the first half it almost worked. Nine shots worth 1.09 expected goals, four of them by Diallo, and two fast breaks worth 0.30 each, both missed. Diallo was United's best attacker: four shots, two dribbles won out of two.
United had their best performance of the season in the first half: an even share of the ball, strong transitions, Amad Diallo excellent but wasteful, and four big chances missed in the half. (For reference, FotMob counts three big chances for United in the whole match.)
Then it stopped. From the break United made 71 passes to Chelsea's 109 until the hour, 17 to 47 until the 71st minute and 99 to 210 after that, with three shots, all in the last twelve minutes. Fernandes, the captain, back after being benched at Bournemouth, took all seven corners, made three key passes and was dispossessed three times. Mbeumo was a lone striker with 34 touches, no dribble won and no aerial duel won, and a yellow card in the 81st minute.
A low block, and a lot of fouling: 20 fouls to Chelsea's 8 (12 of them after the break), four yellow cards and a red. United cleared the ball 19 times. Maguire cleared four balls but also made the one mistake the match log links to a shot, at 43:05.
United did press at the start: in the opening minute the pressing runs went to Chelsea's midfielders and their right-sided attacker. But the rest of the match was a low block, and the first goal shows its weakness. Lavia won the ball in midfield and Rogers had thirty metres with nobody stepping out to him. On the frames, when Rogers reaches the edge of the box five United players are between him and the goal or beside him, one of them on the ground, and two more are running back. United were not short of bodies. Nobody stopped the ball.
United's fast breaks were their best chances of the first half and both were missed. After the red card they had no counters at all: three shots in thirty minutes. Their weakest moment was the start of the second half, when Chelsea made 64 passes in the first five minutes to United's 31 and the goal came straight after Fernandes's lost pass and Mbeumo's dispossession.
United had seven corners, all taken by Fernandes, six of them in the first half and five between the 30th and 38th minute. They produced three shots worth 0.06 expected goals, one of them the Maguire header that Cunha turned in from an offside position (ruled out at 34'). The last corner, in stoppage time, ended with Mbeumo's shot hitting the woodwork.
Carrick took off Cunha and Santos for Mount and Heaven, a centre-back, three minutes after Martinez went off. From the touches: a deep, narrow block, with Heaven on the left of the centre-backs, Maguire in the middle, Yoro and Mbeumo on the right, Dalot high on the left and Zirkzee alone up front.
United attacked down their left and Fernandes's pass was lost at 48:51. Mbeumo was dispossessed in midfield at 48:55 and Lavia won the ball with a tackle. His one pass, two seconds later, released Rogers, who took it just past halfway, carried it about thirty metres through the middle and finished past Lammens at 49:03. Twelve seconds from Fernandes's lost pass, five with Rogers on the ball. The chance was worth 0.65 expected goals.
Chelsea took the ball from Mbeumo and Rogers ran with nobody after him. The biggest mistake was Maguire's. The player on the ball is more dangerous than the one at his back, so he should have closed the distance in front of him. Instead he opened a wide space, and that let Rogers move smoothly through the defence and score.
Martinez was booked at 58:38 for a foul on Rogers. Eighty seconds later, at 59:57, Estevao's corner came in and Martinez put an arm in Fofana's face. Bankes went to the pitchside monitor and it took until 62:08 for the second yellow to come out. Palmer scored at 63:07, low to the right, with Lammens getting a hand to it. Three minutes from the foul to the kick, and 0.79 expected goals on the penalty.
Lisandro Martinez was naive. Within a minute and a half of his yellow card, and before his team could rebalance, he slipped a dagger into United's chest and gave Chelsea a penalty. Palmer scored.
Estevao at about 14' (Neto's pass, offside, and the flag is visible on the video). Cunha at 33' (Maguire's header from a Fernandes corner; the scoreboard showed 0-1 until VAR ruled it out at 34:35). Estevao again at 71' (Palmer's pass, VAR). Three offsides on the day's biggest chances.
Fifteen corners: Chelsea eight, United seven. Chelsea's gave Fofana two headers, one of which hit the post, and the penalty. United's seven all came from Fernandes; five of them came in eight minutes around the half hour and gave a ruled-out goal and little else.
The first sign that Chelsea's right side could hurt United.
Seven seconds after Diallo's recovery, one long pass and a cross. 0.30 expected goals.
The nearest Chelsea came in the first half.
United's best spell of the match.
Maguire's header at 33:22, VAR says offside at 34:35. The match log has no events for more than a minute and a half in between.
Fernandes's long pass, Fofana's mistake, and Diallo over the bar. 0.30, the last big chance of the half.
Twelve seconds from Fernandes's lost pass.
Worth 0.68 expected goals on target, one of Lammens's seven saves.
Booked, the arm in the box, the monitor, the second yellow at 63', and Palmer scores at 64'.
Carrick took off a forward and a midfielder after the red card.
It would have made it 3-0.
Welbeck, Barco and Gusto for Caicedo, Neto and Estevao.
United's best chance of the second half.
0.51 expected goals, the biggest chance of the second half.

The top rating in the match, 8.9, and the match award. Seventy-one passes at 90 per cent, four tackles won out of five, four interceptions, 14 recoveries (the most by a Chelsea player in a Premier League match since January 2023), and the tackle and pass that made the first goal. Chelsea's tempo ran through him all afternoon.
United's best-rated player was Senne Lammens, 7.8, with seven saves.
The worst two players for United were Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martinez. They are the senior players, and they did not stand up to the game: they were a burden on the team. Michael Carrick should drop Martinez indefinitely, and he should be sold in January, even though he may be United's best defender.
United were ahead on chances for 45 minutes and Chelsea were ahead on the ball. The match turned on a lost pass at 49' and a second yellow card at 63'. After the red card Chelsea played almost entirely in United's half. Alonso called it a mature performance, and Carrick said United found a way of unravelling in the second half.
Lavia is the match: the tackle and pass that made goal 1, 14 recoveries, and the player who set Chelsea's tempo. Estevao and Palmer carried the right side, and Lammens kept the score down.
United's ninth match without a win ended with a centre-back sent off and a captain who had been benched at Bournemouth taking all seven corners.
